This is a short and easy hike good for bad weather days or when time is short. The ascent is gentle and the trail good the entire way and it takes less than 90 minutes to tag the pass. The trailhead is signed and located on the west side of highway 40 just past Barrier Lake; you'll have to cross the highway to reach the trail.
From the pass it is also possible to scramble Mount Baldy (to the north) or Midnight Peak (to the south) and the beginning of each scramble is just a hike for those wanting better views. A chinook was blowing through when we were there and so we only went a very short distance up Midnight Peak before deciding to call it a day.
